Nicoletta Grillo (b. 1991 in Milan) is a visual artist and researcher based in Brussels. She is an assistant professor of Visual Arts at Hasselt University, and a member of the artist cooperative Level Five.
Her practice explores how images, words, places, and people enter into relation with one another. Often developed through conversations and other forms of exchange, her works investigate the connections between collective and individual memory as a socio-material force.
Working primarily with photography and moving images, she creates verbo-visual assemblages in which language becomes a material component of the image, whether through handwritten interventions on photographs or texts that move within video works.
Dialogue is thus both a subject and a method of her practice: conversations are not only documented, but also translated into visual and spatial forms. Through these processes, she explores the echoes between past and present, public and intimate spaces, territories and individuals.
Recently, her research has focused on the coastal geographies of Southern Italy as sites of crossings and dislocation. A second strand of research has been feminism and everyday life. In both cases, personal and family memories often serve as entry points into broader collective histories.
