Nicoletta Grillo (b. 1991) is an artist and researcher based in Brussels and Milan.
Her practice reflects on a particular concept of resonance: at the core of her work are specific conversations that unfold between images, words — in the form of voices or texts — places, or people. Working primarily with photography and moving images, she investigates how socio-political dynamics move through time and space, tracing the resonances between past events and the present, outer spaces and intimate ones, individuals and collectives. She exhibited in spaces such as Careof / Milan, Focus / Lugano, Fondazione Stelline / Milan. She is one of the winners of Mufoco open call L’italia è un desiderio (2023) and Premio Nocivelli (2022). Boîte Editions published her photo book Noi (2022).
Her academic research focuses on the potential of photographic media and contemporary art to open new spaces of imagination for marginal landscapes and subjects through practice-based and theoretical research, combining perspectives from art history, architecture and urban studies. She authored a book on photography and invisible borders published by Brill (2024).
After studying architecture, photography and music in Milan, she obtained a PhD at the Politecnico di Milano and KU Leuven. She later worked as a post-doctoral researcher at LUCA School of Arts and is now an assistant professor at Hasselt University.
