After les verrotières
2022
“After les verrotières” assembles photographs of washed-up objects collected by Nicoletta Grillo after high tide on the beaches of Belgium and Northern France. The gesture of collecting resonates with the labor of the verrotières: women of the coastline who made their living by digging lugworms from the tidal beaches of the North Sea, using a small spade to extract the worms from the sand and sell them as fishing bait.
The project stemmed from research carried out on the Wunderkammer of the Musée L in Louvain-la-Neuve. As part of the project, Grillo held a participatory workshop at the museum to assemble an alternative collective cabinet of the sea made of pictures from different sources.
